Delivery and installation of air conditioning technology at Chemnitz City Hall

55 main components newly installed in only five days

Assignment for the Chemnitz SCHOLPP team just a few kilometers from their own front door: installation of new etna Group air conditioning technology at Chemnitz City Hall. SCHOLPP supported the project with its inside delivery technologies. Chemnitz City Hall is one of the largest event centers in the region, having multiple halls, lounges, and foyers for music events, shows, and conferences. The summer break was used to rehabilitate and modernize the ventilation and air conditioning technology in ventilation control center 1.

Only 5 days to complete the contract

The SCHOLPP team’s shipping list included a total of 55 main components for air conditioning equipment with a single-component weight of max. 800 kg. The installation dimensions of the air conditioning parts were up to 2.80 meters (vertical). However, due to the spatial conditions on site, the air conditioning parts had to be brought in lying down, entailing additional installation steps and time within the extremely tight time window of only five days. To meet the demanding schedule, the work cycles were allocated flexibly, meaning the work was performed by two teams with rotating task assignments. First, all of the components had to be unloaded outside. They could only be brought into the building through the underground garage entrance. Once inside, the parts had to be transported to the air conditioning control center horizontally because of the spatial conditions. Finally, the air conditioning equipment was set upright in the interior space and positioned exactly on the planned installation site. The transport equipment used by the SCHOLPP employees included two forklifts, a loading crane, several lifting platforms, and various items of moving gear, lifters, and transport tools.

Keeping a cool head when space is tight

The path of entry outside was very tight due to the inner-city location. It was also necessary to keep fire service and underground garage access clear at all times. No less tricky were the requirements placed on the team by the interior space. The transport path inside City Hall had some choke points, such as the low clearance height of the doors. For this reason, many components had to be brought in lying down. The delivery sequence was timed together with etna to be just-in-sequence to account for the small amount of temporary storage space. With all of these unique factors, the project required a high level of planning effort in advance. It was therefore necessary from the outset to collaborate closely with etna’s technical planners as well as with the responsible parties from City Hall.

Overview
Customer:

Etna GmbH

Industry:

Mechanical engineering

Project type:

Rigging projects

Task:

Unloading, bringing in, and positioning air conditioning equipment at Chemnitz City Hall

Equipment used:

Forklifts, loading crane, several lifting platforms, various items of moving gear, lifters, and transport tools

Unique factors:

Very tight time window of five days for complete inside delivery, path of entry outside subject to very restricted spatial conditions due to inner-city location (keeping fire service and underground garage access clear at all times), limited spatial conditions along the inside path of transport (low door clearance heights, bringing in many components lying down), small amount of temporary storage space (just-in-sequence delivery)
