80-t extrusion system for the plastics industry

Dismantling and relocation of a system for film production

SCHOLPP has many years of experience and expertise with systems used in the plastics industry. The company Horn & Bauer commissioned the SCHOLPP team to dismantle and relocate a 7-layer co-extrusion system. This technology is used to manufacture plastic films.

The mid-sized family business Horn & Bauer from Schwalmstadt was founded in 1924. Today, the North Hessians are leading specialists in the manufacture and finishing of plastic films. These are primarily used in functional protective and packaging solutions in all industry sectors worldwide. The Horn & Bauer group has more than 350 staff and maintains several production sites in Germany, France, England and Spain.

A complex system with multiple components

The production technology, consisting of several components, was surrounded by a steel construction that carried all the associated plant components: extruder, flatness unit, take-off and winder. The steel tower was 15 meters long, 5 meters wide, 16 meters tall, and weighed a total of approximately 80 metric tons.

Transport from Brandenburg to Thuringia

The extrusion system was dismantled and loaded in Boitzenburg, in the Uckermarck/Brandenburg region. Twelve truck trailers and three lowloaders handled the transport. The destination of the relocation was the Horn & Bauer site in Wolfsberg, located about 470 km away near the university town of Ilmenau in the Thuringian forest. To accomplish the reinstallation and recommissioning in Wolfsberg, SCHOLPP worked together with Reifenhäuser GmbH & Co. KG Maschinenfabrik of Troisdorf in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Truck-mounted-crane installation in a tight workshop

The hardest part of the job was installing a four-metric-ton haul-off unit. This needed to be installed into the supporting steel structure at a height of 14 meters using a truck-mounted crane. One of the greatest challenges was the limited space in the plant, which meant the truck-mounted crane had little room to maneuver. Only six weeks after dismantling began, the system was able to start production at the new site as scheduled.
