Bringing machines into a pharmaceutical clean room

Pharmaceutical industry: Transport and move-in of packaging machines

A really clean job: SCHOLPP move-in two packaging machines to the pharmaceutical company Pfizer Manufacturing Deutschland in Freiburg/Breisgau as part of a regional machine transport project. The client was the machine manufacturer Uhlmann Pac-Systeme GmbH & Co. KG from Laupheim in Baden-Württemberg. Both machines were brought into the clean room during ongoing production.

Machine transport for the pharmaceutical industry

The international pharmaceutical company Pfizer, based in New York/USA, employs more than 2,500 people in Germany at its three sites in Berlin, Freiburg and Karlsruhe. Two packaging machines have been added to production at the Freiburg site. Pfizer ordered these from Uhlmann from Laupheim in Baden-Württemberg, which is one of the world's leading manufacturers of machines for packaging pharmaceuticals.

The SCHOLPP team completed the approximately 200-kilometre transport route from Laupheim to Freiburg and the move-in in Pfizer's production facility within two days. A cartoning machine weighing seven tonnes (size: 7.50 x 2 x 2.50 metres) and a blister machine weighing 14 tonnes (size: 8.50 x 2, 2.50 metres) as well as technical accessories were on the transport list. The largest machine is used to shrink-wrap tablets in foil or aluminium packaging - so-called blisters.

Tight space conditions during installation in the clean room

On the first day, the machines were transported from Laupheim to Freiburg in three vehicles and the accessories were unloaded and brought in. On the second day, the cartoning and blister machines were unloaded with the help of a 300-tonne mobile crane at a considerable radius of 25 metres - right in front of the airlock to the cleanroom. The two machines were then moved into the production area.

However, this proved to be no easy task, as the length and width of the machines meant that there was very little manoeuvring space available in the cramped hall building. Beforehand, the SCHOLPP site manager had precisely measured the conditions for inferred transport in the production building. Under the given circumstances, an electrically self-propelled heavy-duty trolley was chosen for the internal transport equipment. This ensures maximum manoeuvrability of the machines even in the tightest of spaces.

During transport, the entire team adhered to the safety precautions in accordance with Pfizer's cleanroom protocol and the strict requirements of the pharmaceutical industry. SCHOLPP equips the employees with special protective clothing, which is combined according to the cleanroom conditions and customer requirements.
