New ground for ALDI Berlin: SCHOLPP installs inclined moving walkways

SCHOLPP installed two new inclined moving walkways at the new ALDI supermarket in the Prenzlauer Berg area of Berlin on behalf of Schindler Deutschland AG. Schindler is a world-leading manufacturer of elevators, escalators, and moving walkways and has been working with SCHOLPP for over 20 years. This time, the spatial conditions in the open building shell were rather convenient for bringing in the components, but the extremely tight time frame of just two days was a real challenge even for the experienced moving walkway team.

This project on Storkower Straße primarily called for experience in order to meet the ambitious time frame: timely construction site inspection, detailed dimensioning, precise technical planning and on-time logistics. This was complemented by the good product knowledge of the Chemnitz SCHOLPP team, who specialize in escalators and moving walkways. The two new Schindler moving walkways were delivered in two parts each: the top part and the bottom part. The individual components weighed around five to six metric tons, with lengths of around eleven to twelve meters. Future shoppers will use the walkways as a convenient way of getting from the car park level to the inside of the supermarket.

The two inclined moving walkways were delivered using a semi-trailer low-loader from Schindler. The bottom part was unloaded by a 60-metric-ton mobile crane. It was then brought into the building shell and positioned by crane. As the matching top part was then brought in, it was simultaneously connected to the bottom part on the intermediate support. The connection process required extreme concentration and above all precision from the on-site team. The top part was maneuvered into position in the air, and was then connected to the positioned bottom part with millimeter-precision while still suspended. It was possible to carry out both steps using the mobile crane due to the open building shell. The second moving walkway was installed in a similar way to the first.

Tight time frame, on-time handover

The surrounding spatial conditions in the building shell and in the precise installation position were optimal for this bringing in and installation job. Nevertheless, the timings of the project put the SCHOLPP fitters under a lot of pressure: The new moving walkways needed to be brought in and installed on Friday afternoon, as the roof of the building was going to be attached and closed on Monday. In spite of this added pressure, the job went off without a hitch. The weather, the technology and the entire SCHOLPP team were in perfect harmony, meaning that the installation job for ALDI and Schindler was completed by the requested deadline.
