New installation of a machine as part of a technology project

Installation of individual components with weights of up to 40 metric tons

The machine relocated in this project is the only one of its kind in the world. It is a prototype from Dreiling Maschinenbau GmbH based in Geisleden. The machine traveled from the manufacturer’s premises in Thuringia to Saxony with the help of SCHOLPP. The destination was the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU in Chemnitz.

At SCHOLPP, every order has its own special touches. This project was truly special, since the product to be installed and transported was one of a kind. As part of the “Next-Generation Maritime Technologies” large-scale project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), Dreiling Maschinenbau GmbH developed the prototype machine for production of components for marine gear units.

Relocation from Thuringia to Saxony

The relocation took place from Geisleden and Zeulenroda in Thuringia (manufacturer’s headquarters) to the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU in Chemnitz. The machine will be used for the “MarGet – More efficient components for marine gear units through resource-conserving and environmentally friendly production strategies” initiative. Also included in the project consortium along with Dreiling and Fraunhofer IWU are Flender GmbH in Bocholt, the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau, and Project Management Jülich (PtJ).

Dreiling Maschinenbau will be taking over the “Development of a test facility for incremental forming of hollow shapes under high forces and high torques” sub-project. Here, a completely new spin extrusion plant will be developed and built. The aim is for this plant to be used for chipless manufacturing of hollow shafts. The shafts will have a maximum external diameter of 600 mm and an overall length of 2,000 mm.

Machine installation with gantry

SCHOLPP provided installation support for dismantling and reassembly at the customer’s premises in Geisleden and at the destination site in Chemnitz. The total weight of the components of the prototype machine was up to 40 metric tons. The largest dimensions were up to 3.50 x 3.50 x 5.70 meters. All machine components along with all of the accessories were dismantled and then loaded onto a truck. At the installation site in Chemnitz, these goods were unloaded and transported across to the construction site. SCHOLPP also provided installation support to machine manufacturer Dreiling for the construction of the prototype. The equipment that was used included a 160-ton crane and a type TG140-2 lift mast.

The biggest challenge in the project was supporting the roller, which was the plant’s largest component. Initial handling at the various installation locations was very difficult due to the uneven weight distribution. However, due to the intensive planning preparation, SCHOLPP was able to move and install the components without any incidents. The order was not complete until the plant was installed and positioned.
