Newspaper press installed: cable gantry with special technical solution for low ceiling height

Decades of successful cooperation: SCHOLPP has been providing assembly and logistics services to the international printing press industry for 50 years. The company has already handled many projects for manroland GOSS websystems GmbH, both at home and abroad. This assignment took the SCHOLPP Erfurt team to Offenburg on the Upper Rhine, to bring in and install a manroland GOSS Colorman newspaper press at Reiff Zeitungsdruck GmbH.

The press was manufactured and supplied by manroland GOSS from Augsburg. SCHOLPP’s Erfurt team, which specializes in printing presses, then took over the project on site at the print shop. Unloading, moving, positioning and assembling– the classic SCHOLPP service. Before the customer could set their press to work, the team had to roll up their sleeves and get to work.

Powerhouse moves into position: cable gantry

The heaviest section of the web offset printing line, a printing unit measuring 4.50 m x 2.90 m x 2.90 m, weighed in at 28 tons. These parts could not be moved by the muscle power of the fitters alone, of course. To assemble the plant, which in total measures 15.00 m by 8.00 m by 12.00 m, the SCHOLPP fitters brought in their tried-and-tested powerhouse: a cable gantry. These special gantries have been specially developed by SCHOLPP for printing press assembly.

Years of know-how: proven technology, experienced site manager

However, the success of these demanding projects in the printing industry depends not only on tried-and-tested technology that is constantly being refined, but also on the human factor: The site manager in charge, Andreas Rudloff, brought his 30 years of experience with printing press assembly to bear on this project in Offenburg. SCHOLPP is not only proud of its unique technology for assembling such special machines, it is also proud to have such highly qualified and dedicated employees.

Site perfectly prepared for assembly

When the trucks arrived at the Reiff print shop, the site was already perfectly prepared for the installation. The cable gantry had been set up and was waiting patiently to flex its muscles. The trucks brought the large components all the way into the workshop, right underneath the gantry. The gantry picked up the parts and positioned them according to the manufacturer’s assembly plan. Smaller attachments and accessories were lifted with the overhead crane.

Special technical solution for low lifting height

Despite their experience, forward planning and powerful technology, the SCHOLPP fitters had to overcome one challenge: managing the low ceiling height of the press room in relation to the size of the press components. This limited the lifting height of the cable gantry. The SCHOLPP Erfurt engineers undertook precise analyses and calculations in advance on how to solve this problem. The newspaper press was handed over to the customer precisely on schedule.
