Relocation of a Eurofighter test bed

When designing and building a Eurofighter test bed, relocation and transport are not normally a factor at all. But because EADS Defence & Security (DS) with its Military Air Systems division has expanded the Manching site near Ingolstadt into a military aviation centre and all test and simulation areas will therefore be located here in future, the Eurofighter flight control rig, the test stand for the important tests of all hydraulic and control functions of the aircraft, had to be transported: from the Ottobrunn site, the previous centre of the Military Air Systems development departments, to Manching near Ingolstadt.

The industrial services provider SCHOLPP acted as general contractor for Military Air Systems of EADS DS throughout the entire relocation process. There were a number of obstacles to overcome during the transport. For example, two complete reinforced frames had to be attached to the rig and welded in to connect the individual components into a transportable unit. The hangar had to be partially dismantled in order to get the rig onto the premises. The complete Eurofighter FCSU rig, together with the S-IR 110 steerable plate carrier, was moved around a very tight bend on the factory premises by a 300 tons crane. Finally, the rig was loaded over the factory fence onto the waiting heavy goods vehicle, a so-called vessel bridge.

However, the transport was initially unable to set off as there was no way through due to a lorry accident on the A9 motorway. Slightly delayed but undamaged, the rig finally arrived at the Manching plant site at 4 a.m. after travelling 100 kilometres on the fully closed A 9 motorway, where it was safely unloaded and positioned at its destination with the help of the TG 620 hydraulic lifting gantry.
