Transporting valuable classic cars

Removal and indoor delivery of historical vehicles in the customer center

A major presence in the showroom: SCHOLPP enjoys working for the world’s oldest car maker. Yet this time, it wasn’t production facilities and machinery that were on the transport agenda, but a very special collector’s item—a Mercedes Benz built in 1923. This motoring treasure stood in the showroom at the Mercedes Benz customer center in Bremen. Due to a change in exhibitions, SCHOLPP was commissioned to remove the classic car with great skill and to put a new exhibit in its place.

This classic car is a monument to German automobile history. The Mercedes, unveiled at the Berlin Motor Show in 1921, ushered in the supercharger era of the Daimler motor corporation together with the 1.6-liter 6/20 hp model. Paul Daimler, son of Gottlieb Daimler, had drawn up the plans for the vehicle after extensive experimentation. Series production then began in 1923. With a displacement of 2.6 liters and a water-cooled, four-cylinder, in-line engine developing 60 hp at 2,800 rpm, it reached a top speed of 100 km/h—impressive for its time.

Such historical and valuable coachwork required particular care to gently remove it from the upper floor of the showroom down to the ground floor, where it was then taken outside. The installers used four electrical chain hoists to mount a heavy-duty platform on an aluminum gantry with titanium spindle supports of particularly high load-bearing capacity. The platform could be moved and aligned using trolleys on cross bars. When moving the classic, which weighs around two metric tons, the installers had to ensure that it was evenly lifted from the stand and lowered onto the ground floor, as the vehicle’s design meant that its weight was not spread uniformly on the platform. The synchronously controlled electric chain hoists made this task easier.

Lateral transport within the building and transfer to the outside was completed with muscle power thanks to smooth-running heavy-duty rollers. Hardboard was laid to protect the high-quality floor coverings in the customer center. Once the SCHOLPP team had removed the classic car, a new exhibit was then brought into the showroom in the same way.
